Held at the Conservatory Garden in New York City, the annual Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon, or “Hat Luncheon,” is named after Frederick Law Olmsted, who was a landscape architect and the co-designer of Central Park. The event honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation and enhancement of Central Park and other public spaces in New York City. It is also a fundraiser for the Conservancy’s mission of park preservation and restoration. The first Frederick Law Olmsted Awards Luncheon was held in 1983, and it has since become a highly anticipated event on the city’s social calendar.
I chose a dress designed by Gianfranco Ferré during his tenure at Christian Dior, along with a custom-made sky-high fascinator of silk magnolias made by avant-Garde milliner, Noel Stewart, whom I learned of through his client Lauren Levison and designer, Christy Rilling.
Noel Stewart is a British milliner known for his innovative and cutting-edge designs. He studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where he developed his unique approach to hat-making. Stewart’s designs are characterized by their sculptural shapes, bold colors, and unexpected materials. He has collaborated with a number of high-profile fashion designers, including Christopher Kane, Erdem, and Richard Nicoll, and his hats have been worn by Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. In addition to his work in fashion, Stewart has also created hats for theater productions and art installations and has won numerous awards for his work. Today, Noel Stewart is considered one of the most exciting and innovative milliners working in the fashion industry.
Gianfranco Ferré’s Spring 1993 collection for Christian Dior was a stunning display of the designer’s talent and creativity. The collection featured a range of elegant and sophisticated designs, with a focus on luxurious fabrics and intricate details. Ferré’s signature style was evident throughout the collection, with bold shapes and strong lines, creating a sense of drama and power. The Spring 1993 collection for Dior was a masterful display of fashion design and showcased his skill and vision in creating truly unforgettable pieces.
Mother nature brought beautiful weather for the occasion, and the garden’s flowers were in full bloom. The luncheon was a fun and festive opportunity to wear colorful spring fashions, but also to contribute to the Conservatory’s mission.
